Google recommends hyphens over underscores to separate words in URLs. Once a page is published, keep its slug: changing it needs a 301 redirect from the old URL.

What makes a slug
SEO-friendly

The slug is the part of the URL after your domain. It shows in search results as a breadcrumb, gets pasted into chats and emails, and ideally never changes. Worth getting right the first time.

Lowercase and hyphenated

Letters are lowercased and words joined with hyphens, the separator Google recommends for URLs.

Accents converted

Accented letters are converted to plain ones, so the URL works everywhere without percent-encoding.

Stop words removed

Filler words like the, and, for and how are stripped so the slug keeps only the words that carry meaning.

Years removed

Leave the year out of the slug and you can update the page next year without changing its URL.

Trimmed to what matters

Cap the slug at 3 to 8 words. Short URLs are easier to read, share and remember.

Bulk mode

Paste a list of titles, one per line, and get every slug at once, ready for a content plan or a site migration.

How to use the URL slug generator

  1. Paste a title, or several titles one per line.
  2. Choose a maximum number of words; 3 to 5 suits most blog posts.
  3. Keep remove stop words and remove years on unless a word is essential to the meaning.
  4. Add your site prefix to preview the full URL, then copy one slug or all of them.

URL slug best practices for SEO

Google recommends simple, readable URLs with words that describe the content, with words separated by hyphens. The slug has a small effect on ranking, but a clear one helps people decide to click and understand where a link goes.

Include the main keyword, once

A slug like /email-marketing-tools/ tells both people and search engines what the page covers. There is no benefit to repeating the keyword or adding variations.

Keep it short

Three to five meaningful words is plenty. Long slugs are awkward to share and harder to read in the breadcrumb Google shows.

Leave out dates and numbers that will change

A post titled “10 best tools in 2026” may have 12 tools next year. /best-email-marketing-tools/ can be updated forever; /10-best-email-marketing-tools-2026/ cannot.

Do not change a live slug without a redirect

Changing a published URL throws away the links and history it has built unless you add a 301 redirect from the old address. Decide the slug before you publish.

Frequently asked questions

What is a URL slug?

The slug is the part of a URL that identifies a specific page, after the domain and any folders. In example.com/blog/email-marketing-tools/, the slug is email-marketing-tools.

Should I use hyphens or underscores in URLs?

Hyphens. Google recommends hyphens to separate words in URLs, because it reads them as spaces between words.

Should I remove stop words from URL slugs?

Usually yes, because they make the slug longer without adding meaning. Keep one if removing it changes the meaning or makes the slug unreadable.

Should I put the year in my URL?

Generally no. Put the year in the title, where you can change it, and keep the URL stable so the page keeps its links and history when you update it.
