Your meta tags

Paste the block inside the <head> of your page. On WordPress, an SEO plugin such as All in One SEO, Yoast or Rank Math already outputs these tags, so enter the title and description in the plugin instead of adding a second set.

Clean head tags,
no guesswork

Most pages need the same handful of tags. Getting them right, and escaped properly, is fiddly by hand. This builds the block for you and flags a title or description that is too long.

Title and description

With live pixel checks, so you know both will display in full in Google before you publish.

Canonical URL

Tells search engines which URL is the main version of the page, which prevents duplicate-content confusion from parameters and copies.

Robots directives

Choose index or noindex and follow or nofollow. The default adds max-image-preview:large so your images can show at full size.

Charset and viewport

The two tags every modern page needs for correct text encoding and mobile rendering.

Social tags included

Optional Open Graph and Twitter card tags so links shared on social platforms show a proper title, description and image.

Safe escaping

Quotes, ampersands and angle brackets are escaped, so a title with punctuation cannot break your HTML.

How to use the meta tag generator

  1. Enter the page title and meta description; the counters show whether they fit.
  2. Add the canonical URL, the one clean address you want indexed.
  3. Leave robots on index, follow unless the page should stay out of search.
  4. Toggle the social tags, then copy the code into the <head> of your page.

Which meta tags actually matter for SEO

Dozens of meta tags exist, but only a few affect how search engines crawl, index and display a page. The rest are either ignored or only used by social platforms.

Title tag

Technically not a meta tag, but the most important element in the head. It is usually the headline of your search result and a strong relevance signal. Use the title tag generator for ideas.

Meta description

Not a ranking factor, but often shown as your snippet, so it affects clicks. One unique description per page.

Canonical

When the same content is reachable at several URLs, the canonical tells search engines which one to index. Self-referencing canonicals on every page are a sensible default.

Meta robots

Controls indexing at page level. Use noindex for thin pages such as internal search results or thank-you pages. Do not block those pages in robots.txt as well, or crawlers cannot see the noindex.

Tags you can skip

The keywords meta tag has been ignored by Google for years, so this tool does not output it. Tags like revisit-after and rating are also ignored by Google.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I put meta tags?

Inside the <head> section of the page HTML, before the closing </head> tag. On WordPress and most site builders, you set them in the SEO plugin or page settings instead of editing code.

Does Google use the meta keywords tag?

No. Google has ignored the meta keywords tag for ranking for many years, so it is left out of the generated code.

What is the difference between noindex and nofollow?

Noindex asks search engines not to show the page in results. Nofollow asks them not to follow the links on the page. Most pages you want out of search should use noindex, follow.

Do I need Open Graph tags if I have meta tags?

Search engines read the standard tags. Social platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn read Open Graph tags to build link previews, so add them if your pages get shared.
