Is keyword density still a ranking factor?
Not in the way it used to be. Google has said for years that it does not use a target keyword density, and modern search understands synonyms, related terms and meaning. There is no percentage that makes a page rank.
What still matters is that the page clearly covers the topic. The main keyword should appear where it naturally belongs: the title, the main heading, the opening paragraph and at least one subheading. After that, related terms and complete answers matter far more than repetition.
Why check it anyway
Because the opposite problem is real. Text that repeats one phrase over and over reads badly, and Google’s spam policies explicitly name keyword stuffing. A frequency count catches it in seconds, especially in text that has been edited many times or written with AI.
What is a “normal” density?
Pages written naturally tend to land somewhere under about 2 to 3 percent for their main keyword, but this is an observation, not a rule. A short page can go higher without sounding forced and a long guide can be lower. The verdict in the tool is a prompt to reread the text, not a score to optimise for.
Use frequency to improve topic coverage
The 2 and 3-word phrase tabs are the most useful part. Compare your page’s top phrases with those of the pages ranking above you. Phrases that appear across all of them but not on your page are often subtopics you have not covered yet.

What is the best keyword density for SEO?
