Lines that are not valid http or https URLs are skipped and reported, so one typo cannot break the file.
One domain only
Optionally keeps only https URLs on the first domain, because a sitemap should list pages from its own site.

Add today’s date or one you choose, or leave lastmod out. Google uses it when it is consistently accurate.
Properly escaped
Ampersands, quotes and angle brackets in URLs are escaped the way the sitemap protocol requires.

Do you need a sitemap?
Google can find most pages by following links, so a small, well-linked site can rank without one. A sitemap helps when a site is new with few links pointing to it, is large, has pages that are hard to reach through navigation, or changes often.
Most platforms already make one. WordPress has a built-in sitemap at /wp-sitemap.xml, and SEO plugins replace it with their own. Shopify, Wix and Squarespace also generate one automatically. This tool is for static sites, custom builds, migrations and sites where the automatic sitemap is broken.
What belongs in a sitemap
Only canonical, indexable pages. Leave out redirects, 404s, noindex pages, duplicate URLs with parameters, and pages whose canonical points elsewhere. A sitemap full of URLs Google should not index is a mixed signal.
Accurate lastmod dates. Google has said it uses lastmod when it is consistently accurate. Setting every date to today on every export teaches it to ignore the field.
Skip changefreq and priority. Google ignores both, which is why they are off by default here.
Limits
One sitemap file can hold up to 50,000 URLs and 50MB uncompressed. Larger sites split URLs across several files and list them in a sitemap index.
Point crawlers to it: the robots.txt generator adds the Sitemap line for you.
